Autosound very much subscribes to the 'only strong as the weakest link' syndrome but I would say that the most important component is the source. i.e. The head unit (cassette deck, Cd-player, CD-changer).

Equalizers and Signal Processors can be used to try to tweak the sound but it is near impossible to put back something that wasn't there in the first place. Thus, it is important to have a good head unit; one that provides a high-quality audio signal to the rest of the system.

NOTE: This one's just my opinion. Some people will differ on this view!
