Common sizes of Sub-woofer units are 8", 10", 12", 15" and even 18".
As a general rule, the bigger the driver, the deeper and louder the bass output will be. Though this is true, 8" units can sound very good when used in a well-designed enclosure.
In my opinion, a car with eight 15" units is overkill. (Many will disagree). Two 10" drivers in a well-designed enclosure will provide enough bass for the average car-stereo enthusiast (providing that an adequate supply of power is available). [This comment does not apply to those striving to set SPL records].
Having said that, if you are going to shell out the money to get two 10", you might as well go a step further and get two 12" which should sound a little better (deeper and louder) and cost not too much more. You could say why stop at 12s, go for 15s. The main problem with 15" and 18" drivers is that they generally require very large enclosures and thus are difficult to use in Sedans. Station Wagons and Vans have fewer space restrictions.
